FOR THE LOVE OF GREYHOUNDS
Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada is all about finding homes for one of the world's most charming, affectionate, and loving dogs - the retired racing Greyhound.
We are proud to be The Newfoundland & Labrador Branch of Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada (GPAC). GPAC selects our adorable adoptee's, provides care when they arrive in Musquodobit Harbour, Nova Scotia, and transports them to the airport for the journey that brings them to Newfoundland and Labrador. GPAC provides us with advice to help with our program and the settling in process of our new pets. GPAC also does a major amount of the fund raising that helps support the effort.
Since GPAC, Nova Scotia and its' members are 1000 miles away, we needed to establish a community of Greyhound lovers here in Newfoundland. We think this link from the main Web site will assist us in this venture as well as being a useful addition to the primary GPAC Web site. Not only will it promote adoption and awareness but provide us with the opportunity to socialize, and share "Greyhound moments" through conversation and pictures.
Of equal importance, this website will attempt to answer questions relating to the care of Greyhounds in this Province that are asked of us regularly. See FAQs.
URGENT PLEASE READ - March 23, 2008
Please meet Chase. Chase is a 2 year old greyhound who retired at the age of two following an injury to
his front leg during a race. It appears that his leg will not heal properly and is causing him some
discomfort. The bones (radius and ulna) are misaligned resulting in requiring the bones to be re-broken and
surgically repaired. This is a difficult repair and the cost is approximately $2000.
As a non-profit adoption program aimed at placing ex-racing greyhounds into loving homes, we would really
like to see Chase have the opportunity to enjoy his retirement pain free and happy. Chase is a wonderful pet
but currently does not want to use his leg when walking and appears to be in a lot of discomfort when using it.
A recent splint on his leg has helped. His foster mom reports, "the splint seemed to make a big difference to
his comfort level so he has another splint in place until we figure out what to do for him. Chase seems very
comfortable now - he is holding his tail up (it was tight to his body previously), is doggy smiling and is
following us everywhere around the house".
If you would be willing to help Chase by making a donation to help pay for his medical costs, it would be
greatly appreciated. You can donate by using our paypal link here on our main website or by contacting
Karen McDonald at mysticdeal@yahoo.ca to make alternate arrangements. We really appreciate your assistance.
Chase would be happy to send you a huge thankRoooo!
*** PLEASE MAKE A DONATION ***
GPAC NL is a non-profit charity relying on the donations and generosity of people like you to make this
program a success. As an adoption group we experience high costs associated with caring for those dogs
requiring adoption. Every dollar of your donation goes directly to helping these dogs including high veterinarian
costs and travel from the tracks to NL. Please consider supporting the program so that we can continue to place
these dogs and care for the many thousand still waiting for their permanent homes. Thank you so much for you donation.
Click the donation button to go to the PayPal donation page.... And from the owners and the hounds THANK YOU!!!
Would you like to sponsor a greyhound coming to the island?
You can receive a tax receipt for your generosity. Plus! You will also be featured on our website!
** Your Support ... with transportation **
all new greyhounds arrive in NL by flying cargo. Given the expensive cost associated with this, the NL branch subsidies all costs with each adopter paying a portion of the cost. If you would like to help with the transportation of a greyhound to NL and Labrador, please feel free to make a donation.
In addition, many greyhounds retire due to medical reasons such as a broken leg, etc. GPAC will often pay additional veterinary costs to ensure a greyhound gets a new leash on life. Any donations can be used toward our Sparkle Fund which directly pays for the medical needs of retiring greyhounds.
** PET FRIENDLY HOTEL ! ** For those of you who travel, keep BEST WESTERN Traveller's Inn on the top of your list! < view their ad/notes >
