In loving memory of Delavega (Kiowa Fluid), October 1, 1995 - October 26, 2006.
Delavega was also known as Vega, Veg, Boogie, Boog, Boogie Bear, Delaboogily, Mom's boy and Dad's dude. He would come to any of these names. He arrived here in St. John's in 1999 and he was 4 years old. He was the only silver brindle here on the island and one of the largest of the greyhounds.
When Delavega arrived here, he was nervous and very timid. He slept with his eyes open and was unfamiliar with human affection. He soon warmed up and assumed the role as a well loved member of the family and a great companion. He loved to cuddle and he quickly became a very lovable boy.
Delavega loved going to the dog park and socialized more with the dog owners there, than the dogs. He enjoyed going for walks down the wooded path behind our house. He especially loved going for walks when he was able to wear his suede coat that I had made him. He walked as though he felt proud to wear it. He knew he was a handsome boy.
Everyone who has met Delavega will never forget him. His kind and gentle manner attracted the attention of all dog lovers. He would always lean against those who petted him. When we hugged and kissed him, he'd lean into us, close his eyes and raise his head as if he was hugging us back. He quickly became familiar with the silly songs I would sing him when we would cuddle; one of which I sung him as he took his last breaths.
Delavega would always be the last one out of the bedroom in the mornings. He would occupy our bed once we got out of it and he wouldn't budge unless he thought he would get some grub or get outside. He would play with my husband Danny by taking his hand gently in his mouth and leading him around the house.
He'd do just about anything to get a treat. He'd nudge his treat bag with his nose, give us his paw and even sing by howling with his nose up in the air like a wolf. He knew we couldn't resist his charm.
Delavega was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his front left shoulder on October 20th after having a normal Xray the 2 weeks before that. He walked with a limp and he started to have a lot of pain. For all the beautiful memories he has blessed us with, we owed him a life without pain so we had him euthanized on October 26th. It was one of the hardest thing we've ever went through. Danny and I lay there on the floor of the vet's office with him as the vet helped us rid him of his pain.
Delavega will always be in our hearts. He couldn't have been loved any more that we loved him. We miss him so much and will for a long time. Although his time here is through, his spirit will live in our hearts forever.
Danny and Natasha Lowe
